May 3 - June 29
Opening Reception: May 3, 5 – 8pm
Located in the Main Gallery at Blue Spiral 1, a group exhibit including work from Dean Allison, Tamie Beldue, Arthur Brouthers, Ian Brownlee, Julyan Davis, Dustin Farnsworth, Kathleen Hall, Luke Haynes, Reuben Negron, Dominique Saks, Jon Sours, and David Samuel Stern will be presented in May and June. Go Figure incorporates painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and textiles. “Working with the figure in the visual arts is challenging because everyone can relate to it — everyone has their own experiences, and there can be so many taboos attached,” explains Allison. “I’m really excited to see how all the artists portray their experience and deal with the figure in ways that we viewers can relate to.” The show will explore approaches as wide ranging as quilted portraits, cut-and-woven photographs, and life-sized cast-glass sculptures. Beldue tells Asheville Made she appreciates Blue Spiral’s “commitment to … figuration in contemporary art,” especially since it gives her the chance to show a newly finished 20-foot drawing, Navigating the Hurdles, in the making for years. “I’m looking forward to exhibiting this alongside a fantastic group of artists that share the same level of engagement with the subject,” says Beldue.
