Juxtaposed: Unexpected Relationships
An event every day that begins at 12:00 am, repeating until July 19, 2019
Opening Reception: June 7, 5:30-7:30pm
Located in historic downtown Marshall, Flow Gallery is opening an exhibit titled “Juxtaposed: Unexpected Relationships.” The show brings together artists working in a variety of media such as sculpture, jewelry, painting, wood, metal, fiber, photography, ceramics, and more. The community of Marshall has seen juxtaposition itself: The picturesque, music-rich town on the French Broad River has been home to some families for eight generations. But newcomers are arriving with increasing frequency, changing the face of Main Street with bistros, breweries, and other signs of new times. Participating artists have created pieces that explore a similar dynamic, through the marriage of materials and concept. Viewing old and new, hard and soft, contradicting images, and other varied materials together side by side as a singular piece can be an eyeopening experience for viewers; the proximity of the pieces to one another prompt discourse on the implied relationships. “I had some interesting stones that were languishing in a drawer,” says Flow jewelry designer Pegi Pike. “[Using] copper wire, I created this sense of fluidity around the stones — like the way the French Broad River out here runs parallel to Main Street, around the curves and boulders … as it flows on through to Hot Springs.”
