Momentum Grows: Contemporary Gallery Expands

Momentum Gallery is opening a new location at 52 Broadway, Asheville.

Momentum Gallery, a rising star in Asheville’s constellation of galleries and collections, has found a new permanent home, at 52 Broadway, near its intersection with West Walnut Street.

Open only since October 2017, Momentum has already lived up to its name. Its stable of artists represent the region’s major names while offering their work in a greater context, alongside artists who have earned international acclaim. The gallery was a leading exhibition partner at both SOFA Chicago and Miami Art Week this past year. With plans to expand to 15,000 square feet, and the possibility of as much as 21,000, this move will make it the largest gallery in the region.

Owner Jordan Ahlers plans the move in late summer and will run the gallery at both locations for a time; he says he’s excited about the opportunities this new space will allow, noting that he hopes to “increase programming opportunities for engaging exhibitions, community events, and educational and immersive art experiences. It’s a chance to grow smartly.”

Location is everything, and the gallery searched carefully for the right building and neighborhood. Neighbors will include the Center for Craft, Blue Ridge Public Radio, Mora Collection, On Broadway, L.O.F.T., and The Satellite Gallery. Alongside their new neighbors, Momentum looks forward to helping grow what’s been branded the Broadway Cultural Gateway, an expansion of the current downtown arts scene, with its own flavor. As he says, “we are looking to strengthen the arts scene and elevate it.”
