Latest Works by Philip DeAngelo

Our Hope

This month, local painter Philip DeAngelo will have a selection of his latest landscapes featured in the FW Gallery at Woolworth Walk. The exhibit will include hand-embellished giclées, originals, and small framed pieces.

“Many of these pieces were done last year during COVID, so they’re based around my home in Leicester,” explains DeAngelo. “We’re up on a ridge, surrounded by farmland with animals, so there are several scenes I can see just from my deck. All of the farmed land around us is in conservancy, so it’s a very rural area.”

The artist conveys his world in simple shapes, bright colors, and texture. “I got nuts with my surroundings,” the artist tells Asheville Made. Throughout the last year, DeAngelo found peace through painting the landscapes around him.

The Way

“[DeAngelo] believes in a God who is in love with beauty and He created this vibrant planet to reflect that beauty,” reads the gallery’s press release. “Much of his work is based on the ‘Golden Section,’ and the use of implied symbolism.” As DeAngelo states, “There is an order to nature, you just need to know where to look.”

Tina DeAngelo, his wife, studied art history in college. The couple previously owned a gallery up north before visiting Asheville 14 years ago. After hearing about the up-and-coming art community, they sold everything to move to the city and become part of the River Arts District. Today, they have a working studio and gallery on Roberts Street in the RAD.

Lifted High

“I’ve got a group of six to eight other artists that I get together with to do art,” adds the painter. “We started getting together last year. I feel like this is similar to the art movement in SoHo in the 1940s. Asheville is just it. This community of 250 artists is our family. Everyone watches out for each other, and it’s a really neat thing to be a part of.”
