According to Asheville creative Nava Lubelski, art is everywhere — even in discarded balls of thread, found fabrics, cut paper, dirt, dryer lint, electric wire, smoke residue, cut paper, and other landfill-bound odds and ends. To prove her point, Lubelski will open a solo showcase called Things We Think We Know at Tracey Morgan Gallery on Friday, April 26. Per a press statement, the exhibition “is made entirely from the detritus of the home and studio.” The gallery notes: “Scraps of what is damaged, worn out, or left over from other projects are given new life, elevating the fragmented, the forlorn and the forgotten bits, into something worthy of attention.” A piece titled “Bubby’s Bed Sheet,” for instance, uses a tattered bed sheet as a canvas for bold, expressive stitching and brushstrokes. “I want to remind people … to look honestly at the difficult world we’ve made and to remember that almost anything can be salvaged if you try hard enough to find a solution,” says Lubelski.
