Cèilidh, Opening July 5

Contemporary Americana painter Philip DeAngelo is on a music kick. Back in May, he teamed up with Michael Cartellone, the high-octane drummer of Lynyrd Skynyrd, to present a duo show centered around the men’s shared Sicilian heritage. Now, the River Arts District artist is planning Cèilidh (pronounced kay-lee), a group exhibition inspired by the popular Celtic rock/Americana band Scythian. According to a gallery statement, DeAngelo and his wife, Tina, have watched the lively ensemble play at MerleFest in Wilkesboro for many years. Then, last November, they had the chance to spend two weeks traveling through Ireland with the troupe. “The band occasionally coordinates and leads bus tours, and the timing just happened to work out for [Philip and Tina] to go on this one, enjoying band performances and tourist activities along the way,” explains Greg Vineyard, gallery director. Intent on taking their fandom to the next level, the DeAngelos will sponsor a performance by Scythian at The Grey Eagle Music Hall on Friday, July 5, at 7pm. Earlier that day, the gallery will also open a Celtic-, Irish-, and Gaelic-themed exhibition featuring artists working in paint, wood, glass, basketry, metal, clay, mixed media, and steel.
