According to UNC Asheville professor Tamie Beldue, “… art has the ability to change the way we perceive the world around us.” Such is the premise behind the college’s annual juried international exhibition, Drawing Discourse. Now in its 16th year, the show will feature 57 works of contemporary drawing selected from 1,033 submissions by 322 artists from five countries. “This exhibition seeks to demonstrate the breadth of drawing as an activity more than as a medium, allowing room for alternative responses,” says Beldue. In past iterations of the show, work has included materials such as video, installation, photogravure, wire, silicon polymer, plastic sequins, found fabric, shattered mirror, oil on canvas, and cut drywall. “The possibilities of what is defined as a drawing are endless, and this exhibition celebrates just that,” says Beldue. “I hope visitors walk away with awe in technical proficiency, a deeper understanding or curiosity about a subject, and the pleasure of experiencing the range of image-making.” A public reception is slated for Friday, January 18, 6-8pm in the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery in Owen Hall on the UNCA campus.
