Mark Harmon began painting lichen before Hurricane Helene flooded his studio on the top floor of Riverview Station. But these resilient organisms feel more relevant than ever as Harmon and other makers in the River Arts District adapt in the wake of disaster. “… lichens are symbiotic survivalists that have been around for 750 million years,” the painter tells Asheville Made. “I hope to help people recognize the beauty and importance of humble lichens and encourage us to consider the lesson they offer: Patient progress through cooperation.” This month, Harmon will present a curated selection of his lichen paintings during All Creatures, a group display at Mark Bettis Gallery. Pieces included in the exhibition will pay homage to all of our planet’s critters — from red-cockaded woodpeckers to milk snakes. “We created this show to honor all of those creatures, big and small,” reads a gallery statement. “…furry, winged, and crawly, each one represents a special presence and relationship on this Earth.” For the show, Asheville fashion illustrator Carlos Marrero has illustrated a whimsical owl set against a buttery-yellow background. Marrero says the owl holds significant symbolism after the storm. “I read that it often appears during times of change, offering guidance and support through transformation,” he says. “Its ability to see in the dark suggests a coming clarity, which feels especially meaningful in uncertain times.”
