New Shows at Upstairs Artspace

Shadow/Leaves/Berries, Glenda Guion

For the past 11 years, fine arts ceramicist Glenda Guion has called a two-acre tract in Spartanburg, South Carolina, home. It’s a place she shares with magnolia trees, blueberry bushes, demure owls, and the occasional snake. Culling inspiration from the beauty of this wild landscape, Guion has prepared a new series of clay forms built from slabs and paper patterns. She will present this work at Upstairs Artspace in Tryon as part of From Earth to Archetypes. The exhibition runs concurrently with Mapping My Universe, a show of paintings and works on paper by Greenville, South Carolina, artist Luis Jaramillo. According to advance press, Jaramillo’s “layered compositions reflect a process of mapping emotions, experiences, and exploration, offering a poetic interpretation of place and self.” This March, the Polk County venue will also present work by Dana Jones and Ralston Fox Smith, artists from Greenville, South Carolina, and Asheville, respectively, in Parallel Line. Per a gallery statement, the pair will “engage in a visual dialogue through parallel explorations of geometric abstraction.” All shows open on March 16.

All shows: March 16-April 25; Opening Reception: Sunday, March 16, 2pm
