Patience Makes Perfect

Patience is more than just a virtue — it’s an essential part of the creative process. Patience Makes Perfect, a new exhibition at the Focus Gallery at the Folk Art Center, brings together five talented members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild whose work demonstrates the dedication and time required to master their mediums. Featuring Michael Hughey (paper), Eileen Hallman (fiber-textiles), Heidi Bleacher (fiber-felted sculpture), Bill and Pam Clark (clay), and Rita de Maintenon (fiber-crochet), this show will highlight a diverse range of materials and techniques, each requiring a unique kind of patience to bring it to life. Opening in May in the Main Gallery, the Haywood Community College Professional Crafts Program Graduate Show will spotlight the work of recent graduates from this esteemed program. Since 1977, Haywood Community College has provided aspiring artisans with the technical expertise and creative freedom to excel in fields like clay, fiber, jewelry, and wood. “The graduate show is the capstone of two years’ effort by our students,” says Brian Wurst, a woodworking instructor at the college. “The Folk Art Center is a marvelous space to showcase them — now as emerging artists, and hopefully for many as future Guild members.
