News from the League

The Park at Flat Rock, Susan Havey

The Art League of Henderson County has a full calendar this spring, starting with the return of Fabulous Fakes

A seasonal favorite, this quirky group show invites artists to reinterpret masterpieces by the greats. “From Monet to Renoir, Klimt to Van Gogh, the member artists put their thinking caps on and transform masters’ works into modern pieces of art,” reads a press statement.

The exhibit will be displayed across several local galleries, including The Art Place Gallery (2021 Asheville Hwy., Hendersonville), Art MoB Studios and Marketplace (124 4th Ave. East, Hendersonville), and Art on 7th (330 7th Ave. East, Hendersonville). The show runs from April 2-26. An opening reception is slated for Saturday, April 5, 2-4pm.

Never ones to rest on their laurels, particularly amid the vernal season, the League will also be moving The Art Place Gallery from its current location on Asheville Highway to 730 Locust Street, right in the heart of Hendersonville’s newly revitalized 7th Avenue Historic District.

President Diane Dean says the location is much more walkable than the last. The building is also about 1,000 square feet bigger.

“This new spot will help us achieve our mission by increasing the community’s access to art while giving our artists more opportunities to sell their work,” Dean explains.

The League will take possession of the commercial space on April 1. A grand opening is slated for Saturday, May 3. At 2:30pm that same afternoon, the organization will also unveil ArtScape, an annual public art program that showcases local artwork on banners along Main Street and 7th Avenue. This year, banners featuring works by local students will be installed on light poles in Jackson Park.

“The artwork is selected annually through a jury process and then reproduced on banners,” Dean shares. “The public art display offers a creative and unique twist on an outdoor gallery experience.”
