Potter and sculptor Leonid Siveriver is a well-traveled man. After a childhood in Ukraine, he pursued his BFA in ceramics from the renowned Bezalel Academy in Israel. He then spent time roving Europe, learning stone carving and bronze casting in Italy, and working in Austria. However, it wasn’t until he moved to the United States in the 1980s and visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art that he found his true artistic style. “They had this huge wing of African art, and it just blew me away. It had such a profound influence on me; it guided me,” says Siveriver. Today, the artist lives in Weaverville, where he works in stoneware, bronze, fiberglass, resin, and terra cotta, creating abstract sculptures inspired by the art he saw at the Met. Intricate and eye-catching, these pieces make quite the statement at Odyssey Gallery of Ceramic Arts, a 5,000-square-foot clay collective in the River Arts District. Come December, represented artists will present new work. Siveriver plans to bring a collection of sculptures as well as functional cups, bowls, plates, and platters inspired by the “visual strength and beauty of nature.” The show runs through the end of January.
