It’s said that Zeuxis, an ancient Athenian artist, once painted a still life of grapes so realistic birds swooped from the skies, eager to fill their gullets. Asheville multidisciplinary artist Jacqui Fehl isn’t interested in fooling any avians. However, she does explore the still-life genre in a boldly contemporary way. As Fehl explains, “I’ve taken the traditional concept of still life and reimagined it, playing with form, color, and composition to create something that feels both familiar and fresh. The pieces are evocative and abstracted, blending familiar elements with unexpected twists.” Her portfolio features unconventional renderings of glass bottles, citrus fruits, flower bouquets, and other inanimate objects. Much to Zeuxis’ dismay (or, perhaps, delight), Fehl’s subjects are never depicted realistically. There’s an artful messiness and grunginess — a scribble there, a splatter there. Nothing is perfect, and Fehl likes it that way. “Every piece I create is like a visual story,” she says. “Sometimes it’s bold and vibrant, other times more subtle, but it’s always a reflection of something I want to express. The process is as much about discovery as it is about creation, and that’s what keeps me coming back to the canvas.” Fehl will present new work during 18 x 14, a group exhibition of small pieces by artists at Wedge Studios.
