Where Mountains Meet the Moment

Two painters interpret the Blue Ridge at Asheville Gallery of Art
Quiet Places, Bronwen McCormick

A new exhibition at Asheville Gallery of Art turns its focus toward the ridgelines, hollows, and ever-changing light that define Western North Carolina. On view March 1-31, Our Mountain Home brings together Annie Gustely and Bronwen McCormick, artists whose approaches differ in scale but share a deep connection to place. Gustely’s oils linger in the particulars. Inspired by “light, reflections, rogue hues, and deep shadows,” she paints what she calls “the story of everyday life with all the color and magic we sometimes fail to see.” Her close studies of sunlit slopes and shifting seasons create an intimacy that rewards slow looking. McCormick works in watercolor, translating expansive views into fluid atmospheres where mist softens the horizon, and pigment moves with the rhythm of the land. Together, the exhibition moves between proximity and distance, inviting viewers to consider not only how the mountains appear, but how they feel to inhabit.

Our Mountain Home: March 1-31; Opening Reception: Friday, March 6, 5-7:30pm
