Silver Robot, Michael Fitts

Glass bends between fragility and strength in Reflections, a group exhibition opening this summer at Blue Spiral 1. Featuring artists including Rick Beck, Carol Milne, Kazuki Takizawa, and Matthew Szosz, the show explores the expressive possibilities of glass through sculptural works, functional objects, and wall-based pieces that shift between precision and unpredictability. Elsewhere in the gallery, Virginia artist Michael Fitts transforms reclaimed scrap metal into remarkably convincing trompe l’oeil paintings, rendering everyday objects — dented oil cans, crayons, toy robots — with meticulous realism and a touch of humor. Meanwhile this summer, the gallery’s Showcase space turns toward the evolving texture of city life through work by Isaac Payne and Peter Olson. Payne’s layered architectural collages reflect the disorienting pace of development and gentrification, while Olson transfers photographs of crowds and passersby onto hand-thrown porcelain vessels, turning fleeting public moments into intricate decorative patterns.
