In her first solo exhibition with Tracey Morgan Gallery, interdisciplinary artist Elizabeth Alexander reimagines domestic décor as evidence of a slow unraveling. Opening August 16, From the Book of Time uses wallpaper, upholstered furniture, porcelain ware, and other objects associated with domesticity to “reveal the many contradictions lurking beneath the surface of lovely, docile appearances.” Drawing its title from a Mary Oliver poem about a storm visible on the horizon, the exhibition is steeped in subtle unease. “Like the poem, there is evidence of time passing and changing the contents of this show: figures sit idly in images while they dissolve, porcelain tableware is worn down into delicate shells, floral decor is dying before one’s eyes,” the gallery shares in a press release. Alexander holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy, and her work has been shown at institutions including Crystal Bridges, the Nasher Museum, and the North Carolina Museum of Art. She is currently an associate professor at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts.
