Dale Chihuly, a prolific glass artist exhibited in more than 200 museum collections worldwide, understands the limitations of his medium. “Glass is very durable,” the maker explains on his website, “but it’s also fragile and can break at any moment.” Still, Chihuly never lets the possibility of failure stop him from creating visionary works that are as vibrant in color as they are vivacious in form. “I’ve always tried to push the medium as far as I could in terms of shape and scale,” Chihuly notes. “It is a challenge to see how big we can blow and stretch the material.” This summer, Momentum Gallery will present Chihuly on Broadway, an exhibition featuring a curated selection of the artist’s glass sculptures, charcoal drawings, serigraphs, and other works. The gallery will offer special programming during the show, led by former Chihuly associate Paula Jacobson. During tours, visitors can view the gallery’s Chihuly holdings and the works of prestigious local and regional glass artists: Call 828-505-8550 to reserve.
