At first glance, a cherrywood spice box or clay bunny figurine may look straightforward enough. But take a closer look — or, better yet, speak with the artisan behind these works — and you’ll quickly discover that handmade objects are very involved. “The devil is in the details,” reminds Kari Morton, co-owner of Flow Gallery in Marshall. “Something may seem simple, but the details are complicated.” In late September, the Madison County venue will present an exhibition inspired by the idiomatic phrase. According to Morton, the show is one of four themed displays hosted by Flow each year. “The goal with these shows is to provide an opportunity for the family of Flow artists to create something new and be a part of something with a handful of other artists,” she says. As Morton explains, many artists will use the show as motivation to finish an in-progress piece or breathe life into a concept they’ve been sitting on. There’s also a good chance a creative or two will tiptoe outside their usual medium.
