Modernist Will Henry Stevens (1881-1949) was born in Vevay, Indiana. But it was the time he spent in the Louisiana Bayou and the Appalachian Mountains that had the most significant impact on his creative style. “His enduring curiosity about the natural world, and his belief that there was a purpose — a design — in nature, led him effortlessly between representational and abstraction as he freely adjusted both style and medium to convey nature’s essence,” reads a statement shared by The Bascom: Center for the Visual Arts in Highlands. Through next January, the art venue will host a display of work by the prolific painter. Curated by Michael Manes, co-owner of Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville, From the Lowlands to the Highlands will showcase “Stevens’ love for nature, his understanding and proficiency with color, materials, and composition, and how two very different environments shaped the career of a Southern Modernist.” Just in time for the Yuletide season, The Bascom will also host a selection of handcrafted gifts in the Bascom Shop and Greehey Atrium starting November 2. The Holiday Market runs through late December.
