Dating back to ancient Mesopotamia, backgammon is considered one of the world’s oldest board games. It’s also one of the most entertaining, at least according to lifelong player Bill Shea. “Backgammon has been part of every family gathering for as long as I can remember,” says Shea, who learned the rules of the game alongside his four siblings and later taught his own four sons how to play. But as the Shea’s boys grew older, the standard, store-bought boards proved too small and flimsy for their spirited matches. So, he crafted his own from a piece of salvaged wood, discovering a niche knack that has since grown into Legacy Boards Backgammon. Today, Shea and his wife Kerri run the small business out of Marshall, making one-of-a-kind gaming boards and tables from live edge slabs — typically black walnut, poplar, sycamore, or maple — and high-quality leather. In December, the couple will demonstrate their craft during the Holiday Sip & Shop, a two-day sales event at Grovewood Gallery. In late fall, Grovewood will also host the 6th Annual Vessels of Merriment, an exhibition of drinking vessels made by 17 potters from across the country.
