Petal Power

“It’s what keeps me alive,” Marshall artist Susan McChesney said of her chosen medium — pressed-flower art — during an interview with Asheville Made back in 2021. Though much has changed over these past four years, including a hurricane that has been classified as a “geological event,” McChesney still finds joy amongst the petals. On Saturday, February 22, she will share this joy during a hands-on workshop at the Satellite Studios at Mars Landing Galleries. The three-hour workshop will focus on the Japanese tradition of Oshibana, offering insight into techniques for pressing, unpressing, and sealing flowers into stunning compositions. The workshop includes all materials, a pressing packet, and a resource guide to continue the practice at home.

Workshop: Pressed Flower Art is slated for February 22, 1-4pm at the Satellite Studios at Mars Landing Galleries (37 Library St., Mars Hill, marslandinggalleries.com). Cost is $65. For more information about Susan McChesney, see mcchesneyart.com and on Facebook and Instagram: @mcchesneyart.
