Connection

Sculptures by Joël Urruty

This May, Gallery Mélange presents Connection, a solo exhibition by Hickory-based sculptor Joël Urruty. Known for his elegant use of wood, bronze, and mixed media, Urruty transforms the nuances of human relationships into sculptural form. Through a series of abstract and figurative works, he explores how we connect, drift apart, and remain subtly tied to one another — even in silence or distance. “My sculptures embody an abstract yet intuitive approach, where smooth, fluid lines and refined textures come together to create harmonious forms,” he shares in his artist’s statement. “I believe in the philosophy that ‘less is more,’ and this principle guides my creative process, resulting in pieces that are both minimal and profound.” Originally from San Francisco, Urruty studied design at San Francisco State before apprenticing under master woodworker David Marks. He later earned his MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology. His work is held in collections around the world, including the Asheville Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Connection runs from May 2 to 18.
