Somewhere Between

Cool Morning Quilt, Lillian Tew

In her debut solo show Somewhere Between at Mars Landing Galleries, Candler-based artist Lillian Tew will present a collection of textured, dreamlike landscapes that balance wild joy with meditative calm. Her materials are humble — everything from upcycled cardboard to thrifted paints — but her vision is luminous. “Lillian’s paintings encourage you to linger and seek out all the hidden details, as they don’t come at you all at once,” says Miryam Rojas, owner of Mars Landing Galleries. “They also evoke an air of reminiscence that a viewer could wonder if they had once possibly dreamt her images.” A mother and maker, Tew draws constant inspiration from her two children, who sometimes leave their own marks on the paintings. Their spirit of spontaneity and curiosity shows up in playful scribbles, unexpected color bursts, and the gentle imperfections that give her work its heart. “Hopefully, the imperfections in my pieces will encourage others to pursue their creative endeavors with ease,” says Tew. “Let us all trust that the act of art-making is more profound than the art itself. Spending time in creative flow is divine.” Somewhere Between runs from May 2-June 1.
