In November of 2023, oil painter Amanda Kendrick moved to Asheville with the dream of working in the River Arts District — “a dream that spawned from a 2017 visit,” she explains. But right as her career was gaining ground, Hurricane Helene hit, and “a lot of that momentum came to a crashing halt.” Staying Strong, a benefit exhibition opening at Bender Gallery in January, intends to help artists like Kendrick get back on track by funneling all sales directly to participating creatives. Several paintings donated by artists represented by Bender Gallery will also be available for purchase, with the proceeds benefiting the River Arts District Artists. “Hundreds of artists have been displaced, with the rebuilding process potentially taking years,” the gallery shares in a press statement. “While there isn’t a simple solution to this disaster, we are happy to provide an exhibition space to showcase just some of the great work coming from Asheville artists.” Abstract painter Jeremy Phillips is eager for the show, noting that it will provide “crucial support at a time when sales are down.”
