Stitched in Surprise

Guild artists showcase playful works on the Parkway
Dragon Fossil, Barbara Jones

For Hendersonville fiber artist Barbara Jones, creativity begins with a question: What happens if? What happens if twine meets silk, if fabric is singed or stitched, if scraps are layered and pulled apart? “Most often, it’s me wondering about the media I work with,” she explains. “How would this piece of fabric look with that scrap of twine, or how might something melt or burn — and suddenly a piece is taking shape.” That spirit of curiosity fuels her contributions to Kaleidoscopic Whimsy, a group show at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway, where she’ll present a cross-section of techniques designed to invite viewers closer. “There’s a lot of detail to see,” she says. Jones’s work will be featured alongside fellow Southern Highland Craft Guild members Betty Ann Winters (fiber), Liz Spear (textiles), Nikki Pynn (mixed media), and Cindy Sugg (clay).
