In 2008, contemporary painter Philip DeAngelo was ready for a change. While successful as both a painter and a gallery owner, his soul was no longer being nourished by the work he produced. And so, he and his wife, Tina, sold their 25-acre New Jersey sheep farm and relocated to Asheville. It was here in these mountains that DeAngelo finally felt free to reinvent his creative style. “Tina and I are so grateful to the Asheville community for not only embracing us as neighbors but also for the constant support of my art,” says DeAngelo. “There are so many wonderful charitable organizations here in Asheville, and we want to use our studio to let our customers know about them.” With this in mind, DeAngelo will host two charity-based exhibitions at his eponymous gallery this winter. In December, he and fellow creatives will craft holiday adornments to benefit Shelter Dog Transport Alliance, a partnership of animal rescues across the South that work together to move fur babies from overcrowded shelters. As fur parents to two border collies, the DeAngelos consider this cause especially near and dear to their hearts. Then, in February, the painter will host Love is in the Air. During this unique month-long event, DeAngelo will post a new original work on the gallery’s social-media outlets every afternoon for a first-come, first-served sale. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Western Carolina Rescue Ministries, a nonprofit focused on “reaching individuals in crisis, treating them with respect and dignity, and guiding them towards healthy, productive lives.”
