New Work at the North Carolina Glass Center

Cat’s Cradle Bell Jar, Kit Paulson

A featherless hatchling cries out for its mother. A trio of cottontails spins on a merry-go-round. A human hand embraces a green viper. These are just some of the curious scenes Penland-based glass artist Kit Paulson sculpts using a tiny jewelers torch that spits out 2,100-degree flames. From there, she places the figurines inside bell jars to protect them from the forces of time. I want people to feel that they are looking into the past,” Paulson says of the series, but not any particular past.” This June, the creative will bring her whimsical works to the Robert Gardner Exhibition Gallery at the North Carolina Glass Center. According to a press release, the exhibition will allow visitors the opportunity to dive into Kits world where artistry meets innovation.” Paulsons solo showcase will be preceded by a display of new work by Asheville glass artist Brandon Lopez. Informed by experience at prestigious institutions such as Penland School of Craft, Ox-Bow School of Art, and Pilchuck Glass School, Lopez creates functional and sculptural pieces that incorporate glass and concrete. He will also present pedestal works and wall installations.
