Women Celebrating Women, Opening March 1

Brave Blossoms, Kelly Saunders

In most fairy tales, a knight in shining armor saves the damsel in distress. But in Kelly Saunders’ story, no one came running to her rescue. She had to be her own hero. “I know how it feels to have to pick myself up, refusing to wait for external validation or inspiration,” she shares in a press statement. “From the depths of postpartum depression, unhealthy relationships, and numerous moves, I found strength and resiliency from within.” This March, in honor of Women’s History Month, the Asheville-based painter will debut a new series of work titled “My Own Muse” during the Women Celebrating Women exhibit at the Asheville Gallery of Art. According to Saunders, the series is a “visual testament to women who aren’t just mere observers in life; they are unapologetically the creators and subjects of their own stories.” Viewers can expect female figures captured in bold brushstrokes and striking colors, each representing the courage it takes to look inwardly for inspiration and strength — to be your own defender.

Women Celebrating Women: March 1-31; Opening Reception: Friday, March 1, 5-8pm
