Sharon Louden bends light and limits

In Barriers & Boundaries, on view at Tracey Morgan Gallery through November 22, artist Sharon Louden transforms the language of abstraction into an exploration of how limits can both define and dissolve. The exhibition brings together three interrelated series — “Barriers” (2023), “Untitled” (2010), and “Barriers to Entry” (2023-25) — creating what the gallery calls “a rich dialogue between past and present, painting and installation.” Through color, gesture, and architectural rhythm, Louden investigates what happens at the edge — where one form ends and another begins. Her layered compositions suggest motion even in stillness, while a new wall installation, “Barriers to Entry,” transforms the gallery itself into an immersive field of reflection. “Rather than limit one’s field of vision, ‘Barriers to Entry’ creates an infinite number of focal points with which viewers can engage,” curator Avery Glassman notes in advance press. “It’s an inclusive artistic act.” Based in New York, Louden is an artist, educator, and advocate whose work has appeared in major institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum.
