American Folk Art’s October show conjures the macabre
Leatherwood Garden, Jim Gary Phillips

Things will get a little wicked at American Folk Art this fall with Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, the gallery’s newest group show. “Among this collection of paintings, wood-carvings, and pottery, you will find both the familiar and the supernatural,” the downtown gallery shares in a press statement. “Creatures of the night, skulls, devils, and ritual vessels all await you in the garden.” Face jugs grin with twisted horns, whittled critters lurk, and pottery begs for spell-casting under the harvest moon. “Reflections of the macabre can bring us comfort in an unpredictable world, and as we embrace the impending darkness with this gothic-inspired collection, come and see if you find something that haunts you,” American Folk Art invites. The show launches online on Wednesday, October 1, at 11am, with a preview hour before sales open at noon. The in-person exhibition begins Friday, October 3, at 11am, with a free public reception that evening from 5-8pm.
