By day, they keep Penland School of Craft running — managing studios, flipping omelets, sweeping floors, designing publications, and greeting visitors. But after hours? The 14 artists featured in Five to Nine: New Work by Penland School of Craft Staff head to their own studios to make art. Opening Saturday, July 26, at Toe River Arts’ Owen Gallery in Spruce Pine, the group exhibition is a vibrant reminder that creativity doesn’t clock out at quitting time. Visitors can expect functional and sculptural pieces in a wide range of media, including ceramics, metal, textiles, glass, wood, photography, printmaking, and more. “Although the people who made this work dedicate time and energy to their creative life, none of them are full-time artists,” Toe River Arts shares in a press release. “By showcasing the studio work of these multifaceted artists, this exhibition highlights many different ways of being an artist today.”
