Four New Shows at Blue Spiral 1, Opening May 3

Moonset, Peggy Root

Liminal space refers to a transitional or in-between state. It’s neither here nor there but rather a threshold between two distinct realities. Liminal spaces can manifest physically, such as a doorway or a hallway, but they can also exist metaphorically, such as the time between sunrise and sunset. Dusk Till Dawn, a group exhibition happening in the Main Level Gallery at Blue Spiral 1, will explore the latter with paintings, collages, and sculptures that, according to advance press, remind us of the recurrent and striking period of time when the atmosphere is neither totally dark nor completely lit.” Clay 24, a second collaborative display focused on the medium of the title, will run concurrently in the Lower Level Gallery with works by 24 artists. This spring, Blue Spiral 1 will also host Asheville-based artist and designer Eleanor Annand in a solo showcase titled Inflorescence. As noted in a press release, Annands explorations from one medium to another can be likened to the inflorescence of a flowering plant, that when combined, form a succinct bloom.” Meanwhile, Spanish painter Rafel Bestard will debut a series of classically rendered figurative paintings in the Showcase Gallery.

All shows: May 3-June 26; Opening Reception: Friday, May 3, 5-7pm
