Making Impressions on Higher Ground

Print House is rising from the floodwaters.

After anchoring the printmaking scene in the River Arts District for years, Denise Markbreit and Anna Bryant have launched a new chapter downtown. Print House on Carolina Lane rises from the loss of Asheville Print Studio + Gallery, which was devastated by Hurricane Helene. “The scope of the devastation was complete,” Markbreit says of the flood. “We lost all of the work in the space, supplies, materials, and much of the equipment.” With support from grants and donors, they salvaged what they could — including cherished printing presses — and began again, this time on higher ground. Print House will operate as both a working studio and gallery, showcasing original works by Bryant and Markbreit while also offering monthly workshops in techniques like linocut, solar plate, cyanotype, and mezzotint. Classes cater to adults of all experience levels, with special sessions for families, corporate teams, and even bachelorette gatherings. “We hope to become a destination for print lovers residing and visiting Asheville who enjoy, collect, and want to learn the art of printmaking,” Markbreit shares.
