Native America: In Translation, the latest exhibition at the Asheville Art Museum, challenges the camera’s colonial gaze through the work of seven groundbreaking Indigenous photographers and lens-based artists. Curated by Apsáalooke creative Wendy Red Star, the show explores themes of identity, land, heritage, and the enduring impact of colonialism. “These artists provide sharp perceptions rooted in their own cultures, speaking powerfully to the present while acknowledging the weight of history,” Red Star says in a press release. The exhibition includes self-portraiture, performance-based imagery, and multimedia assemblages — powerful tools for reclaiming visual narratives too often shaped by outsiders. “Wendy Red Star is a brilliant artist and has organized a remarkably thoughtful exhibition highlighting some of the most exciting artists working in photographic media today,” says Jessica Orzulak, associate curator and curatorial affairs manager. Admission is pay-what-you-wish for residents of Helene-affected counties.
