The Nature of Things

TNT #18, James Henkel

Asheville- and Penland-based photographer James Henkel has spent more than 40 years rethinking what a still life can be. His work often pairs carefully composed scenes with playful or unexpected twists — like flowers on the edge of decay or objects reflected in distorted mirrors. In The Nature of Things, Henkel returns to Tracey Morgan Gallery for his third solo show, combining work from his 2024 exhibition Cynosure (which was cut short by Hurricane Helene) with an entirely new body of photographs. The latest images are inspired by the ancient Greek theory of atomism — the idea that everything in the universe is made of ever-shifting particles. Using metallic surfaces, mirrored reflections, and soft focus, Henkel captures that sense of constant motion, even in seemingly still subjects. He continues to draw from both Eastern and Western traditions of floral arrangement but plays with those expectations by mixing cultivated blooms with weeds and by showing beauty in both freshness and decay.
